State support in tako.tax

tako.tax is designed to support both federal and state tax calculations. State form generation and filing support are separate from calculation support. Check the state support matrix before relying on tako.tax for your state tax calculations.

The matrix is based on current 2025 state rule coverage in the calculation engine.

States with no income tax

The following states generally do not have a broad individual income tax return: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. New Hampshire taxes only certain interest and dividends income for some years. Other state or local filings can still apply.

Preparing a state return

For supported states, tako.tax uses the data from your federal return as the starting point for your state calculation. Many state calculations begin with federal adjusted gross income and apply state-specific additions, subtractions, credits, and rates.

Review your state values carefully. State tax rules differ from federal rules in ways that tako.tax may not fully account for in the current version.

If your state is not supported

If your state is marked Planned or Not supported, tako.tax cannot generate your state calculation. You will need to use another method to prepare your state return — a state-provided free file option, commercial tax software, or a tax professional.

You can still use tako.tax to prepare and generate your federal return even if your state is not supported.

Part-year and non-resident returns

Part-year resident and non-resident state calculations are more complex and may not be supported for every state that has general support. Check the state support matrix for notes on partial support.
